Actually, I just want to ad that the television commercials starring Nicole Kidman for Chanel a while ago were absolutely amazing. Visually stunning and so much depth so why why why are the magazine ads so flat and one dimensional?!!! Ahhhhh!
O.K...I am interested to know peoples views on the ad campaigns for Chanel and the fact that they are shot by Karl Lagerfeld. It seems to me that as one of the most important houses in the history of couture fashion a tremendous amount of thought and consideration must be taken to make sure the most is made of the opportunity to produce the images that the prestigious house deserves. Is Karl Lagerfeld that photographer? I am not questioning his ability to design clothes, but as a photographer I find it hard to believe he should have the power to take full control over such an important art. Something he has not trained as, does not have an archive of work spanning decades...I could go on. Compare with Nicks work with John Galliano for the advertisements of Dior. Do you see what I am saying? Chanel is as equally prestigious as Dior so why is the same care not taken with their ad campaigns??!! Am I missing something here? I would be interested to know Penny Martins views as well. Thanks.

Personally I absolutely loathe that Nicole Kidman advert. Way too much money ( a reported 18 million ) was spent on a cringe worthy dialogue and with an actress who I don't believe is actually as beautiful as this advert implies. I think the whole advert should just have been the very last scene of her on the steps and that's it. They're now re running them instead of producing a new one, it drives me just as crazy as The Iceland Adverts!!

Haha. But what about the magazine ads? What do you think?

Good question and yet the answer is very simple Karl decides, I tink....Having said that, I personally do not find Nicole Kidman the embodiment of Chanel's allure and evocation of total simple elegance. Yes she dresses well, etc. but you must have the right face with the right image to makes us all 'believe'. No matter how you portrait her, she will always remind us of Nicole Kidman the wonderful talented Hollywood's actress ...not Chanel the couture house.

Which ones do you mean, Patch? Aren't the Chanel 5 ones just stills from the Baz Luhrmann film (they were last year when the campaign launched) or do you mean ones for other Chanel scents (some of which are Mert and Marcus, I'm guessing). There are several strands to the Chanel advertising. You'll have to describe exactly.

Sorry Penny you're right. I should have been a bit more precise. It was the images out at the moment in British Vogue directed by Eric Pfrunder that provoked me to post this comment. But generally speaking I find it difficult to accept that any of the images Karl produces for any Chanel campaign are not what they could be because he doesn’t have the technical ability in studio photography say for example that Nick has developed. It is obvious by reading this that I am a huge fan of studio photography and believe that there is so much more that can be achieved for a house like Chanel than what Karl Lagerfeld is capable of. Any of the studio images he has produced struggle to find any kind emotional response from me. And I know you could say that may not be their objective but I think with the right photographer they could be so much more...we are talking about Chanel after all! In years to come will Phaidon the book publisher talk about Karl as an iconic photographer?! I hardly think so, but Chanel is so important to the fashion industry. Is Karl on a power trip or is he just naive to the art and it's potential?! Imagine for instance what Craig McDean could do for Chanel! Am I talking absolute rubbish? Maybe I just don’t understand couture advertising?! Let me know what you think, thanks.

No you are not talking rubbish at all..... you have a very strong and valid point...I must say I admire your observation. I think Karl has lost the sense of reality and he is in a power trip....remember what power can do.....After all he is human and he is a very kind and gentleman, but that is no reason not to make a valid point. Yes Chanel should let new, unknown or known talent create their adds because it is the last credible couture house on the planet and because indeed Karl hasn't built any reputation in the field of photography either for his mastery or originality in the field.....in the long term Chanel will suffer credibility in the short term Karl is just
having fun......
By the way it's so difficult to follow the topics because there is no way to know when someone answers to one of the threads unless once happens to go back to all of them...to check it all
