i'm afraid i haven't read this mag... by 'avant gaurdians' i assume they mean 'member of the avant garde'?

Well, basically Surface magazine has appropriated the phrase "Avant Guardians" for their competition and it essentially comprises photographers they feel are on the forefront of fashion photography, so I suppose yes, "members of the avant garde."

Congratulations Francesca - I always like to check out the AG issue - I just wish they would open it up to international applicants - not that I would necessarily be in contention but it is a great opportunity for upcoming photographers to break into a bigger, more lucrative market.
