. . . or if she's boring don't mention her.

I have to go against the grain here.

I think the Steven Klein Madonna shoot was nothing short of amazing. Some of the shots ware jaw droppingly epic and portrayed a very believable character. Yeah, I'm bored of Madonna too...perhaps that's tainting the story. But it worked, as a whole, for me.

Is this forum full of children, either squabling or appearing to have no knowledge
of the photographer posted for discussion. You're discussing Madonna - when the only
connection to the thread posted is that she was shot by a photographer called Steven. Neil started this maybe he can help bring into line?

Well I suppose I've been aware of Steven Meisel's work for well over ten years. For me nobody really comes close to him.I don't know what it is exactly about his work that attracts me since it can be quite disparate in style.I wish there was a book available containing his editorial work but alas I don't think there is.As for the "Madonna and Klein"(now there's a painting)subject...I think Klein is a bit of a wannabe Meisel and I find Madonna labourious.

The Versace campaigns of 2000 - 2001 did seem to approach the iconic, and with gallery exhibitions, considered by some to be Art. Like the rest of
his work I find them accomplished but devoid of any distinct orginality. I think his work is actually rather bland. There is a subtlty of line and an aesthetic that runs through the work of NK and Penn for example, regardless of subject matter format or technique employed. That Meisel can render the philosophy of a fashion brand so very well and leave no footprint behind is, I believe, the reason for his success and continued employment by Prada. I think however the photographer lends his identity to great campaigns. Think of how Schoener and Luchford made Prada so cool in the 90's, and how Teller has been so important in the building of Marc Jacobs brand. I can see where Klein and Meisel might be seen to overlap, but there is an underlying darkness
that identifies Klein, certainly in recent years, and he is truely more original.

Steven Meisel is clearly technically brilliant in his work, he seems to like trying different styles, maybe that's why people don't find his style distinctive, but the grain in his photos are distinctive, I swear for a while I could tell the photos were shot by him by the certain graininess in them.
