Several leading fashion individuals, including but not limited to River Island's CEO, spoke on the topic of Chinese labourers and their rights at GFW 2006. I cannot quote unfortunately but they insisted inspections in their employed factories were apparently of a high standard, throwing out accusations of their abusing over seas workers' rights. Although this does not confirm Chinese factories are violating its workers rights it does suggest that many leading brands keep their over seas labour under good check. (Except the Nike company unfortunately - check where your trainers were made! Vietnam is a bad sign).
Bear in mind China's current manufacturing technologies are behind ours for reasons of financial and industrial strength, although this does show signs of improvement. Their energy efficiency is also very behind, which doesn't show signs of improving, but that's another topic.
