So what is the task of the artist now?
I'm interested to know what people think they are doing, where they are going with it.
Soon after the second world war, Samuel Beckett said "to find a form that can accommocate the mess: that is the task of the artist now."

After the Second World war, came an interesting period for creativity.from so much death and the risk of it, people wanted to live life to the full.
This opened up society like never before and brought us in to the famouse 1960s period where bohemia and free love and living life just how you wanted was the order of the day ( apart from the fact the population needed to be increased again ) a lot of the more reasent great artists come from this libral and highly creative and exiting period..
The way things are going society will soon bne saying and doing the same things as then,(to hell with it all, I have had enough I will do what I want to do, not what the system dictates me to do.)

Censorship is a way of controlling the masses, in a set way of thinking to conform to social and cultural ideals, (which can very from Country to Country) as interpritated by the powers that be, to make individuals fit in with traditional stereotypical ways of thinking in line with the majority of the population, or governers interpritation of such.
(Not nesseserily right,)a way of keeping society under control of government, or powers that be, this can be done through mininmal information or miss leading information,or miss information, or conditioning society Culturaly as to what is right or wrong, with a view to controling them, which happens constantly in modern society.

Hey guys My name is Kofi, this conversation is a tad bit old, but I admire the posed topic...
Art was and still is revered as the sacred, in many cultures, but it seems that there is a different code of conduct expected from the privilaged few artists showin in Europe...
May be we should put this question to the Art council, or those oganisations who has the purse strings..
It seem that they are the persuation of what is art, and what is not...
Art cannot be commodified, without repraisal, the sacred should surely have a higher place than politics, religion, etc.
Let freedom reign, for the arts to be pure once again!!!
and not subjected to any biased view point...
Hello Kofi, I agree with you, last week I was told that I was going to deep in to things so I will try and lighten up now I have put my views across,
I agree with what you have said though and it goes on at every level in society.

There is no way to generalize what the task of an artist must be. All work would be come very repetative and boring. However, I guesse in saying that i am creating a paradox and in turn saying that the task of the artist must be to have no set generalized task.

what's wrong with deep? are people lazy?
bricolage and the paradox of individualism mean that perhaps the purpose of artists is deliberately conflicted...
to create something new out of life experience and observation which even if one only looks inwards, is still historical referencing and therefore is "old"...to make it appeal to other people, art is free yet there are so many cliques and rules to adhere to or break...so much arrogance with the term "artist" yet it is what reminds people they are human and belong to our species in a very high-up way...
er, ok ill stop ranting now..
