Film maker, set designer, artist. Derek Japan died 15 years ago, (how time flies), from an aids related virus, he recorded the illness in a film called Blue before his death.
Derek made a few films, some very homo erotic and boundary pushing for the time. Sebastian, Caravaggio, jubilee etc (Toya Wilcox).?
He also worked on some of the early videos for the pet shop boys shooting mainly on super 8 film. (Those where the days).
In the film Sebastian one of the actors insisted on having a boner for one of his shots, this was edited out in the framing when screened on T.V. During as series on T.V and film censorship, Jarman was interviewed on T.V. whilst the cinema version of the film was projected behind him as he was talking, bona and all. Very bold for the period and I guess that the T.V program was an early UK channels 4 series.
I was in contact with Derek a couple of times before he died and here are the cards that he nets me. I believe that there is or going to be an exhibition on his life¢??s work soon possibly in London so keep your eyes open.
