I don't know about diamond heists but I met someone who works for Barclays Bank security in the summer and I was really shocked to learn that bank raids happen all the time. The Barclays Branch on Hanover Square has attempts pulled on it on a monthly basis and they invariably have to cooperate and hand the dosh over for fear of having their brains blown out at point blank range. So how come we never hear about these things? Well, if the media were to expose it, it would (a) make customers shit themselves and in turn (b) be really bad publicity for the company in question. I bet Asprey and DeBeers are feeling really stupid about what's happened to them - whoever handed those rocks over is probably out of a job now. I bet their PR people will try to keep the media discreet about it.

I wouldn't worry unduly about loss of trust in stylists by fashion houses, f:lux. Image making and photoshoots are an integral part of the commere of fashion anyway - luxury goods houses will always need the kind of exposure that photographers like yourself and stylists provide. It's a business and in business, you will always find dishonest people. Anyway, in the world of diamonds, half a mill is a drop in the ocean. You should see how much cash goes missing regularly in investment banking - literally gazillions.

I suppose it must be some David Niven/Cary Grant style nostalgia thing I guess. I mean, where's the derring do in a bunch of gangly grungy 6ft 20 year old's in hoodies snatching diamonds out of a car window? No class...

And it's all very well, but trust is a big issue. Photographer, paparrazzi and paedophile don't necessarily have anything in common apart from as titles all beginning with a 'P' but try telling that to some people! Adding theif to the equation is not going to make photographers' lives any easier.

I just realized how easy it would be to go around with a fake commission letter and gather up thousands and thousands of dollars worth of clothes from all the major showrooms and then magically disappear to Nottingham in a rental truck.

You'd be the best dressed in town for a season or two!

A commissioning letter is as simple as a letterhead and a signature, people in press offices and generally too busy mincing around to check I would have thought, at least they certainly are at De Beers and Cartier.

I think they might be a bit more apprehensive now, but wouldn't be surprised if not. Flux I wouldn't let it worry you, it shouldn't affect photographers, if it even affects stylists.

OK, I'll stop agonising and wait for more news

Cartier and De Beers have enough money. This will mix things up nicely. Well, a wee bit. I hope the diamonds are enjoying themselves.
