Gems seized in photo shoot con

"Diamonds worth an estimated £500,000 have been stolen from two of the world's premier jewellery firms in brazen robberies.

Both jewellers, De Beers and Cartier, were conned into delivering the diamonds to bogus fashion shoots. They were told the gems would be worn by models on trendy "urban" shoots in east London.

On each occasion, the couriers were ambushed by robbers in hooded tops and the jewels snatched.

Detectives are focusing on identifying the person who managed to convince both firms that they were setting up a legitimate fashion shoot."

OK, so this isn't about JT Leroy or Celebrity BB, but am I really the only person here to find this story fascinating?

Somebody, with enough insider information about how the high-end fashion photography world functions, convinced De Beers and Cartier to forward half a million quids worth of jewellery for a fake shoot, and nicked the lot. The implications are that it will become more difficult for photographers everywhere to borrow things for shoots.

If nothing else, I'd have thought someone would have something to say about what the theives were wearing, this being a fashion site? No?

I agree with you, this is an interesting subject, far more so than who is a Jaded Tranny from America who writes (personal opinion) far from literary sensations, and from what I know actually is the foster mum. Vincent Gallo is in on it too.

Anyhow, I would love to know more about this. You never know, it could have been as simple as making fake commissioning letters and nobody asking questions. I've had expensive jewellery on a shoot once and it came with it's very own huge black guy who I doubt a tank would have fucked with, so it's weird that it was just couriers that got jacked. Heads will roll at De Beers and Cartier, but I would doubt they would lend such items without knowing the stylist first?

In that case, perhaps the stylist was hoodwinked too (no pun intended)? I'd really LOVE to know how they did it... All the gory details are distinctly missing in this story!

What also gets me is that, though diamond heists are hardly an everyday occurence, this story was given about a two inch column inside the Saturday Guardian, while Gorgeous George got a full page spread with pix of Rula Has-been tickling his whiskers for f's sake. For those people who actually watch Celebrity BB it's hardly what you'd call news, and for those who don't it's not news either. Attack of old-gittishness or what, but really, what-is-the-world-coming-to etc...

I know tell me about it. I was in Holborn studios the other day and in the space of ten minutes of popping to the loo and having a cigarette, I passed ten different groups people (I counted), all of whom were talking about Big Brother. It does worry me that this 'mania' has even the creatives eschewing normal chat.

It all seems a bit fishy to me. I have had similar expirience to Ben- whilst styling for Esquire(u.s.) a couple of years back we did a huge shoots with Britain's top directors (like Ken Loach, Michael Winterbottom etc) actors and playwrites- all very high brow- the Editor flew in from Us etc anyway we had some very rare very expensive driving watches including one worth 25k and even with all the names, top studio etc we still had a security guard in the studio watching over us the whole time.
Rather ironically when it came to the suave British actor being asked to wear this watch he casually rolled up his sleeve and said - "No need-I have one" An identical watch!
And in nearly 5 years of styling i never stole a thing although i had lots of stuff stolen from me so check yourself Detlev!

we did a shoot with asprey diamonds and the security guard who turned up with them left at the end forgetting that two huge rocks were still in one of the model's ears. We had to call him back.

Thats a brilliant story, detlev, I could see that happenning as the guards never seem that interested! I asked the guard if he was having a good day as he seemed to be perving at the girls getting dressed to the point of a court case, and he replied with 'no, I've seen better'.

A man with standards no less.
