Yes we've all heard these rumors about how bad st. martins is, and everyone on this forum is giving second hand accounts of urban legends that happen at st. martins.

I started my foundation at LCF doing Fashion Photography/ Menswear, and the rumors there were, at st. martins fashion ba, they don't teach you how to sew, only students who study on the st martins foundation get into the fashion ba, etc etc, etc.
less than 5% of the people on the LCF foundation got in at CSM, probably because the majority of them were essex girls, whose style icons are Jordan and Victoria Beckham.
This year the Ba Womenswear only let on 1 out of 17 applicants, one was my boyfriend, and from everything he tells me, the course is amazing, in the one month he has been there his work is blowing me away. Lots of people want to go to St. Martins for the hype, but it takes hard work, my boyfriend goes in at 9 am and stays till about 9pm working solid, and comes home exhausted. You get what you put in.

As for my st martins experience, 1/2 way through foundation i was sick of all the essex girls at LCF, and changed to Graphics at LCP. When UCAS arrived i applied for Illustration at LCP, Graphics at Camberwell, and Graphics at CSM. I was accepted to the 1st 2, and my last interview was at st. martins, after waiting for 10 hours my interview, i had 3 minutes with a tutor who said "You've already been offered 2 places, we are not going to offer you a place." Not my work wasn't good enough, or any other reason.
I ended up going to LCP and doing illustration, supposed to be in the top 3 schools for graphics/illustration in the UK, and it was just as bad, in our final year we were in 15 minutes a week, with little or no feedback. In the end you just have to get on with it, if you've got the talent you've got the talent, and your gonna get there if you go to st martins or university of hull.

In Central Saint Martins they don´t teach you how to sew and cut? For me that´s the very foundation of a fashion designer.
It must be very frustrating to realise that you cannot make with your own hands that beautiful outfit you have designed on the paper.
Cut and sewing gives you the freedom to transform your creativity into reality.

Ive had some very good friends that have been through St Martins and have done very well out of it, even though one almost flunked and he never did any work when i lived with him!! He is now working as a shoe designer for very famous label, even though he did textiles and the other is editor of an arts magazine. We did graduate 5 years ago though so maybe times have changed (and our education was free). Fable/Landon -did u both go to St Martins? I used to go to alot of St Martins parties and they were always good fun and had a great mix of talented students to drunkenly chat up. I didnt find any of the people there too pretentious considering the reputation of the college. Sorry to hear these stories - but always take these things with a pinch of salt. You need to make up your own mind and find the place you are happiest. Oops also forgot to mention I know a lecturer there who is a total sweet heart.....not like these horrors mentioned above

I was going to post at the time, but thought better of it, however a friend of mine who keeps an eye on this site from time to time reminded me of the 'discussion'.
I thought I'd point out a couple of things:
1. The forum is 'Foundation at Central St. Martins' not CSM or BA or whatever.
2. Guess what, I'm a tutor there ha ha ha....

At the time that this forum was hotting up (mostly it seems by misinformed people misinforming), I mentioned the 'chat' to my students (actually in the context that SS was an interesting well made site that covered the blur between art/photo/music/fashion better than most), I printed off the text and disseminated it to staff and students (oh by the way we are all in it together), as you can see none of them felt moved enough to join in the bubbling yak attack, so perhaps that says something, dunno, maybe they had something better to do, like work...

yours truly,

Straw Dog.

And your point is? I think everyone is entitled to their opinion. How old are you by the way? You sound fairly young to be a tutor.

Anyway, I was lucky enough to visit the Central St Martins building on Charing Cross while in London and wandered around for a bit. Other than being really dirty and in need of renovating and upgrading, looks like a typical school to me.

Didn't see any torture chambers, but you never know...

Is it just me or is this post really creepy?

Eucinpyos is right everyone is entitled to their opinion, which by the way I didnt quite catch your point Straw dog. This forum is a discussion place and thats whats going on.
If the school in question is not as bad as everyone says it is then its reputation should speak for itself, and wouldnt even make you feel the need to mock the discussion as "Bubbling yak attack"
Seems to me your post kind of illustraits the attitude thats being discused in this forum.
I dont have any kind of vendetta against your school- never applied there, never got rejected there etc but ive known lots of people who have studied there and heard good and bad feedback, mostly bad. Same with Atwerp Royal Academy, except people tend to claim that they are too strict or the workload is too much, but not so much about arrogance and shady behaviour from the tutors. WHY IS THAT?
Are ALL the stories complete bull? Doesnt quite add up.

I did foundation and fashion at St. Martin's and had a fantastic time.
The teaching wasn't that amazing but I made some great contacts ,
and let's face it , that's what the fashion industry is based on.
Also , you are right in the centre of London for Christ's sake ,
if you can't use a college campus like that to your advantage then
stop whining and get youself on a more 'worthy' course in the provinces.
' Ooh , the students are bitchy and unfriendly ! ' . Grow up , what do you
think it's like once you leave ?
