You have to live in your own space, you have to like it, doesn't matter whose artist work you put on. I would put mine on if I like looking at it, I would put my friends art work on because they are my friends and I treasure them, I have a drawing done by a kid, kid of my work associate. I like kids' drawings, I think they look great, and I got a great frame for it. It has got to be a drawing that you like-for whatever reason, your own masterpiece, or your friend's masterpiece, or someone's work who you admire. It's all emotional reasons why you have the work hanging in your apartment, not just to look nice next to your couch.
WHy would you think going on a website might cause you to loose your own sense of self? Your self is made up of different experiences, be virtual or tactile.

I have this feeling that you will come back :):) ... it is not SHOWstudio or any other site ... perhaps it is to do a lot more with ..... feeling lost or confused right now ? ... just speculating , guessing :)

Patch, hope you will come back, I think we all like to talk about issues of art and everything else here, it's actually not very easy to find people who can talk so freely to, about topics that you are passionate about.

Sorry it has taken me a while to answer your question.
I live in a house designed by David Chipperfield.So it doesn't feel in need of anything on its walls. It would feel a bit like hanging art on top of more art. You can ,if you like look it up on SHOWstudio archives as it was an early project.
Having said that,the only things I have ever put on the walls are my childrens' paintings,which are a constant source of joy.
The only other exception to this is in my office where I have a wall sized blow up of a photograph of the Paris riots in May 1968, which is also a source of constant joy.
No I wouldn't hang my own work unless it is work in progress and I need the space to stand back and view it to see where it needs changing .

Hey, that's what I do when I critique my art work, I would have it up on my wall for weeks, look at it over and over, just in passing, to see if it is really to my satisfaction. I don't hang my art work on the wall since the process is already very satisfying. It's not very important for me to keep looking at my own work after it's framed.
