A question for Nick Knight

Showing messages 1–10 of 19

This may seem a very random question Nick but it is asked for all the right reasons - without meaning to be too intrusive and I understand if you do not wish to answer for reasons of privacy but I have wondered lately what hangs on the walls of your home (if anything) and what considerations did you make when you were deciding on the matter? be it political or philosophical

Please feel free to tell me to mind my own business if my question crosses the line.

I would just add that I have recently removed all items from my walls as I couldn’t justify them being there. I don’t seem to be able to find anything that says something I feel strongly enough for in order to hang it on the walls of my home. And I would never hang my own work up as that would suggest I consider it to be art which would be extremely big headed of me. It would be like saying my work is beautiful!

Please allow me a suggestion ... because I don't understand somehow your line of thinking , and do forgive me if I sound totally rude or cynical ! .. ..

What about hanging something that can inspire you on a cause or an ideal ??? ..... something of meaning to your existence and/or that is made by using your own God given talent ? It seems to me such a pity to waste time, ability and creative talent looking for 'solutions' without really being aware or knowing exactly where you want to go and what you want to do with your ambitions ? ... use an IDEAL/S as a map to give you directions ....something you truly believe in and are passionate about .. or just write an statement on your ... beautiful like a plain canvas walls ready to be given the treatment of thought ... and then perhaps it just maybe the answer to your call ...

Generally anything that hangs on a wall is usually there on artistic merit. Now the central question in the branch of philosophy known as aesthetics is 'what is art?' and is based on the notion of beauty. So to hang something on your wall is to recognize it as artistic and therefore suggests that you believe it to hold some kind of beauty. By that wouldn’t it be rather big headed and a tad distasteful to hang your own work up?

Until now I had various items including Roy Lichtenstein posters on my wall but thought to myself as a creative i am doing myself an injustice by promoting the work of others when I should be more concerned with my own work. But again I would never hang my own work up and so now my walls are bare. It is a vicious cycle and I can’t see an answer to the problem. Maybe the fact that I am leaving them bare is the answer? A political statement?

I think your analysing the situation a bit too much.

When I put work on the wall I do not seek to promote it but to appreciate it. Find your favourite pieces of work, whether it's your work or the work of others, and enjoy them.

That's just my opinion of course.

I'd love to hear what you decide to put on your walls, should you choose to do so.

I think I am going to leave them bare. I just cant put my own work up. All that is left are 3 small quartered A4 print outs of Damien Hirsts Diamond Skull, Herzog & de Meurons Allianz Arena in Munich, the Casa da Musica by Rem Koolhaas and a poster of Roy Lichtensteins 'girl with hair ribbon'. They will probably come down soon. Very sad :(

Perhaps by leaving the walls totally bear it gives you the space and the time to think about what should be really there ......

Maybe. It is certainly thought provoking tho. It had never crossed my mind until this week to actualy question what is on my walls. Before most things were there due to aesthetics. Bold saturated colours, the seamless contrast of light and shadow. Things I loved the look of, like cut out Dior campaigns.

But I suddenly thought to myself, hang on, would an artist who has true self respect have the work of another artist on their own wall?! It is just lazy thinking! I wonder what Tracy Emin has in her home, I bet you it is not the work of Damien Hirst or Jeff Koons. Thats why origional question was to Nick. It would be interesting to know what the 'establishment' decorate their homes with. Not that it should make any difference to the less established of course. After all, that is the whole point, to find your own answer!

Incidentally I have requested termination of my SHOWstudio profile. Not for any fault of the website. I just feel I am becoming too influenced by certain sources. It can easily happen with so much great work around but I am losing sense of my own self. If I switch off what will happen? Perhaps I’ll start to see the real me, influenced by no one. Pure.
