Karl,
You ask very big questions. I'll try and answer as clearly as I can.
Spirituality is the state of goodness that allows humans to have the companionship of the Lord's Spirit or the frequent promptings of the Holy Ghost. People who live to overcome worldliness become in tune with things spiritual. When we live righteous lives the Holy Ghost can accompany us. When we make unrighteous choices we drive him away. Since we all make mistakes the answer is to repent or recognize our mistakes, apologize in prayer and try and make up for the mistake if possible and avoid the mistake again.
Knowing how a spiritual experience feels is hard to answer. Since we are all individuals it is a bit different for each of us. Some people have a wave of emotion (almost like laughing and crying at the same time inside), others feel a warm burning inside, still others feel a sense of joy (a touch of euphoria may or may not prick with happy tears).
Some people feel close to God when they are close to nature, others feel the spirit when they listen to uplifting music, still others will feel it when they do a kind deed for another person. When we hear an eternal or universal truth the spirit may confirm it to us. Many people feel spiritual around Christmas time when they give of themselves to others in an open and caring way.
