Hi, I am a designer with BA(Korea) degree in visual communication design and BTEC in Handcraft Tailoring in LCF.
I was a graphic designer for 5yrs and have been taught fashion by myself.
For someone with no previous work experience in fashion styling, i wonder what's the best path for me to be a fashion stylist or to get a job as an assistant of fashion designers?
Is it only way to have BA or MA fashion degree or am I better off with short courses in famous fashion school? Don't companies usually hire foreigner with a fashion degree? please help me to make my dream!!

Well being an assistant to a 'fashion designer' and a stylist are two very different jobs, so might I suggest you narrow down you're dream first?

If you decide to be a stylist, there are two routes I guess. Assisting a stylist is always an obvious choice, though you would be doing many things and learning about the industry it's unlikely you'd be styling much yourself for a long time. If you can afford it do an internship at a magazine. You wouldn't get paid, but you would get to work personally on smaller projects and build up some tear sheets and learn about the industry. I know the fashion team at Arena magazine do this a lot, and I know a few stylists who've come from there by doing that. Remember tear sheets for your book are like gold dust at the start.

Education in styling is utterly irrelevant and you would more likely be laughed at for having a qualification in styling, I have never worked with a single stylist who has one.

Thank you so much for spot-on reply. I really want to be a fashion stylist as assisting stylists. However, neither I have network in fashion industry nor have a relevant portfolio of styling that available to try even unpaid internship or an assistant role. What should I show or do for applying at arena magazine or how to find some stylists to assist and learn though? and sorry to ask you what means the 'tear sheets'?
i'm looking forward to hear you soon. merci beaucoup

A tearsheet is a page or sheet from a magazine that you have been published, hence a page torn (the tear part) from a magazine.

It shows propsective clients that you have been published in the past and so its not as big a gamble for them. Safety in numbers...

All the best with your new career, there are plenty of sites you should check out for more background on the industry.

This is based on photography but the same things do apply to most people in the industry in terms of contacts and folios.

Do a google for other sites and see what you get, also a site called www.whoistesting.com maybe a good start as well, there are more creatives at the same stage as yourself who may be able to help you further than the charming Mr Morris although his contacts into Arena are worthy of further investigation.

Its nice to see a thread where people are helping each other than some of the nonsense on here.

Yes I was using Arena as an example, I would guess any magazine would have a similar sort of process. My advice to try Conde Nast Publications, thats a good place to start.

If you want to try arena address it to Georgina Hodson or Helen Germaine, and do your research first.
