Transmissions?

Showing messages 1–10 of 16

avaf is an 'artist/collaborative' that is also an unidentified 'he' apparently. If the first post is as accessible as the blog intro, bonjour! "...artistic output that tries to avoid the personality driven parameters that dominate much of the art world."

Transmissions has arrived in SHOWstudio-world and nobody seems to have noticed?

Discuss.

1) I keep reading and re-reading the avaf blog and just not understanding what the hell it's about. Is avaf a kind of 'sign that used to be called Prince' thing or what? because the text refers to a 'he' without name who is also artist/collective - ?

2) The above quote is about the most coherent thing I've been able to draw from the offered text, i.e. "...artistic output that tries to avoid the personality driven parameters that dominate much of the art world." I suppose I've isolated this bit precisely because I'm more comfortable with it for that reason - I might have issue with what's being said there, but at least it's something I can get to grips with intellectually (I think)

3)The avaf thing isn't the first in the series of this new Transmissions section of SHOWstudio, but nobody has commented on any of the previous ones either. For example, has anyone looked at No Bra yet, and if so what do they think? What of the now anticipated advent of cheapcream? or should that be 'cheapcream' ?

CONCLUSION - what the...!?

over to you

I know what you mean f:lux. I like to think my reading comprehension skills are pretty good but I have to really focus on that text to get the gist of it. 'cheapcream assume astro vivid focus transmission collective artist...wtf?!' I hate criticizing this site, even if it's just something really minor, which it is. It's like punching a 3-legged dog for being too affectionate. I have nothing but respect and admiration for this site, sometimes awe.

It might seem overly verbose but it's probably necessary to warm-up the viewer to the more cerebral elements that might go unappreciated.

I liked the No Bra thing. 'Reaaaally...' It's hard to make out most of what they're saying, but it's a dead-on satire.

The astro focus thing was amazing. And on a non-cerebral tip that new Ladytron song's a great tune.

Oh thankyou Landon for being there! Really appreciate your response, though I continue to hope the blog author, Christabel Stewart (hello?), might help us out at some point.

Much as it may surprise, I'm not into kicking village idiots either. Quite the opposite. But I don't like being treated as one either. An artwork might be quite obscure, obtruse, almost inaccessible, but does any commentary about such have to be so too?

Hey, help!

I'll make my mind up about Transmissions as I go along. But I'd appreciate the possibility of discussing it here with other interested people. I haven't seen the astro focus thing yet, I admit, and I haven't had time to think about No Bra. Let you know?

Woah! Who said anything about village idiots? I said three-legged dog! Completely different...

That almost sounds like the punchline of a bad joke.

From "punching a three-legged dog" to kicking a village idiot, I don't see much difference. I wouldn't have written it otherwise. However, neither is really appropriate in the circumstances, I'll admit.

I give up!

isn't that jayneCounty on the screen to the right of Ladytron in 'cheapcream'? could explain the 'butch realness', but i know that was also a catagory at the NYC vogueing balls, does this relate?

Christabel, were you possibly referring to the post above in your home page entry from yesterday? We're assuming avaf and possibly yourself have seen Jennie Livingstons 1990 film 'Paris is Burning',
this is such an important film certainly in terms of fashion:
appropriation and aspiration. It's also has incredible cultural significance, in terms how something as microscopic, beautiful and unique as the Vogueing scene can become popularised and destroyed by mass culture and Madonna's bandwagonism. It was never just about dancing...
If any viewers are yet to see it please hunt it down, you will learn something!

Thanks for precisions about avaf Christabel, and thanks for the tip Zeroh!

if it wasnt for madonnas vogue this is perhaps one documentary film nobody would have seen, vogue was released before the film, miramax picked the film up,the film made a million dollars more than another indie film called resevoir dogs did at the time,so i dont think jennie livingston would complain about madonnas video as it allowed the world to see her film
