Yeah F:lux I have been captured by this notion of 'competing truths'in Modernism, Postmodern deconstruction taught me to look at the way 'truths are constructed' so I have an inherant distrust of modernism!

I wouldnt neccesarily call myself a postmodernist, that was the whole point of this thread! I definately have found the notion of Postmodernism difficult for all of the reasons in the above posts and more.

I just try to acknowledge my own bias and pespective in my own work and ideas. question my own truths. or at least reveal them. because if i dont - i feel like I may be in danger of giving tacit approval to modernist way of thinking!

I'm not looking for a new movement! nor looking for new truths! just wondering where these issues were at with other creative people.

quickly with regard the quote you mention, I agree, I knew I had synthesised that from somewhere when I wrote it. and I also agree that everything in my experience is part of a reference for new things i do, re immitation vs inspiration.

postmodernism is not a "main stream" trend, and it is not about the "majority's" point of view at the time. The zaitgeist is determined by the individual and is amplified trhough communication...easy to understand when you are part of a "minority". Not dead!, at least not for my southamerican/female self.

What I don't get is why we are always so concerned with labelling things. Postmodernism is particularly confusing in that by labelling it 'postmodernism' it is inherently part of the mainstream, part of the social consciousness. And yet while I feel that once we name something, we try to categorize and quantify it. Postmodernism is elusive because we don't understand it. And so where does it end and where does it begin? PRetty much we can toss everything under the umbrella of postmodernism and speak in postmodern riddles till judgement day. The problem for me is that I find when we label anything with the prefix 'post' we really don't understand it. And I'll be the first to admit...I don't get it.

JoeB I think you summed up the whole thread so far, thanks! I think your right, you cant 'sum up postmodernism' and quantify it. when you do, it loses it's postmodernity. so it is totally circular argument (causing its death, but from a different perspective). so it doesnt have to die (for you) unless you want it to.
I like what you have to say Maquisin, are you saying you live as a postmodern self? how is your experience of that? how do you create something from that perspective? can you explain some more please?

postmodern rejects rationalist thought. it is not anything new. you could say quantum physics is postmodern thought.

we are in 2005 going to 2006 and almost dead if decoration will not be completly dead (virgin spaces). hope that art will be in our heads made by nanotechnology and sent away by magnetic fields in a city that stimulates inteligence and imagination.
