...that indeed is the core of many problems we are facing around the world..."CORRUPTION" in such a massive scale...the worst social illness of all !!.. I believe... it is a huge stumbling block. You only need to look at Africa !!..they have the natural resources...the goodwill of helping organizations...the finances at their disposal from honest foundations....and yet people do not have the basic infrastructures in place.....That can only and just only be resolved with the will of the people at all levels, crates of money, the newest technologies and indeed the most perfect legislations will never be enough to resolve the problems they face still....until that is when, and only when they decide to work for the " COMMON GOOD" of their people.........

In a perfect world, you need people who are fair and just to carry out sound legislations and do all the right things, and you need citizens who would do the same. China has their own laws that I am sure in writing sound really fair but it's always in the way things are carried out.
I am lucky to be not living in China. As much as I love Chinese culture and history, I would be very frustrated living in China. If I could choose to live someplace in Asia, I might live on one of the few islands off of Hong Kong, at least be protected by Hong Kong's basic law, let's just say I have more faith in the gov't of Hong Kong than the gov't of China.
We seem to have shifted the topic from modern life to modern life in China, though this is the elephant in the room. It's always interesting to me how discussions evolve.

....I have always admired the tenacity, self-respect, hard working attitude of the Chinese people as I have seen it in San Francisco, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona,London....They are proud to do always well under the right circumstances, they adapt to the local cultures while keeping their own and are not imposing or demanding that the majority 'adapts' to them, just the right attitude to succeed !!...something we all can learn from the Chinese....and they never complain !.. Just get on with it...
Arguably ...the English psyche combined with the Chinese hard working ethos is in my personal opinion the reason why Hong Kong became so successful...:):)...they have an incredible rich history and culture which has always been a kind of fascination for the West...since Marco Polo...
Somehow I believe China will become the next 'USA' as far as the economy is concerned in the first place ....but what worries me is the politics....China is not the BENIGN and always tolerant USA !...when it comes to its ordinary citizens voicing their dislike for the the government's unwise decisions ....
China has a lot to learn ( better put...the Chinese Politics ) about letting it go and respect the individual's rights ... as we are used to in the West.....We all should be concerned because whether we want/like it or not....China will have the economic power... and it is only a matter of time....and God help us all...!!!.. if China has not developed the concept of.....Democracy and liberties, respect for Human Rights, and freedom of the press by that time.....so far they do not seem to care at all....that is not a very cheerful sign for the future.....

The 2nd 3rd generation now in SF are getting involoved with local politics, and a HK lady is the head of World Health Organization, I feel really proud of that. China will become the next super economy, no doubt, but China wouldn't be like US, the way US directly tries to influence the world, China has never directly tried to influenced others in the past, its out of its characteristic to do so. Hong Kong is one of the best places where the best of Chinese and the best of Western practices combined, I hope it would never loose that strength. China has to learn to let go of the age old idea of hidding the bad, instead of exposing and facing the problems, rid of the idea of loosing face if problems are exposed to the world, and stop punishing their people out of fear of loosing face by them exposing the problems. Chinese gov't can learn a great deal from Hong Kong.
The attitude of not complain and get on with life has it downside, it's a strength and a weakness. You can't develope the consciousness of human rights and democracy when you always not complain and just get on with situations, you become numb to suffering and problems, and just think of to live to make a living.

There is a Star Trek movie with an awesome idea, in the movie, after WW3, the world's population dropped greatly, this scientist is about the launch his spacecraft to try the new speed of flight(light speed), and in another dimension, a few hundred years in the future, the earth federation is facing this urgency to stop somesort of catastrophy, their enemy wanted to go back in time to stop the experiment so to change the outcome of the future, this completely threaten human race, so the federation has to send their team to go back in time to make sure the success of the launch to its completion. An indeed, they succeed the mission, the scientist did the experiment for money, but after the launch, the speed of the spacecraft attracted outer space intelligent aliens, they usually never paid attention to earth because to them, humans are not civilized and backwarded and still living in equivalence to them cave age. So the aliens noticed the space craft, and decided to drop by earth to check this out, and in the movie, it was the beginning of complete change of perspective for human beings, they realized they are not alone, and once the encounter with alien intelligence took place, all wars and battles on earth stopped, and human beings started to work no longer for money but for common good of humanity.

I disagree with the idea that China would be less interventionist than the United States. To date they have not been in a position to intervene internationally and run the world the way the United States has, but there are small signs- the tension between China and Japan, between China and many Southeast Asian countries, the Korean problem, disputes over natural resources, the war between China and India, that if and when China does become powerful it won't be benevolent at all. Plus, we can tell they don't care about human rights.

I also disagree with the idea that China will be the next economic superpower. While it's possible, there are quite a few reasons against it, demographic trends in China, for example. From that perspective- looking forward 50 years- the country that's really looking good is India.

Which brings us to the critical topic: Indian Fashion.

China and Japan has tension over history, Japan never admitted to Nanking Masacre, if Japan humbled up and admitted to the historic facts of WW2, the relationship between the 2 countries can improve. China often off and on has problems with neighboring countries, that's nothing new. Every country has problems off and on with neighboring countries. Human rights is something China has to really learn to upgrade their consciousness in order to be accepted in the modern world. This and animal rights, I completely agree, if they don't improve and value human and animal rights, their position in the world cannot be respected.
Right now all the problems with Chinese products is a great sign of improvement-it pushes tighter product control domestically, and raise people's awareness. I believe it's all part of the Chinese process to modernize from rural 18th century dawn of industrialization to digital age within 50 years.
