Anyway, I still haven't seen Izo (sorry Ross Phillips), but the last Miike I was able to watch was 'Dead or Alive'. Despite a tagline in idmb reading, "WARNING: This motion picture contains explicit portrayals of violence; sex; violent sex; sexual violence; clowns and violent scenes of violent excess, which are definitely not suitable for all audiences." So, I watched anyway, but was glad cinema isn't yet olfactory...
And yet... completely fascinated by Miike, no matter what! 'Dead or Alive' is the first film of his I've seen where, even if only at one point during the film, I thought, "Oh yes, I know what's going to happen next" but because it's Miike, the expected becomes unexpected - I was still surprised, because for that once the expected actually happened. But just the once.
This bloke has to be a genius? so yes, I'm definitely a fan. The like or dislike thing is a different issue though. I've found all the films of his I've seen so far, well, challenging. That's what I like about them? Is that liking enough?
An HK friend of mine once had what I thought the enviable job of watching films all day to check that dubbing and sub-titles corresponded to what was actually being said. She told me that 98% of what she had to see was utter crap, and that her job had almost entirely spoilt cinema for her. But there was still that 2% that managed to take her by surprise and it was this that convinced her that films in general weren't a complete waste of time. I've lost touch with her lately. But I'd love to know what she thinks about Asian cinema now!

I used to work at walt disney at BVI, one of our lunch time previews was "audition" half of the department couldnt return to work for the rest of the afternoon. The next week, was "requiem for a dream" HA! Old boy is good, the lead actor is vegetarian and found the squid scene particularly difficult. it was live and they had to reshoot several times.

I recently watched a great samurai movie called 'Sword of Doom'. Quite vicious for a film of that time and beautifully shot, with a startling end sequence that reminded me of the crazy 88 scene in Kill Bill.

Sorry to ressurect an old thread... but just this weekend (amongst other stuff) I saw WKW's 2046. Loved the sexy storytelling and all the off centre compositions, the empty spaces, and appreciated having been given the time to look at it all in detail by the style of editing. Can't wait to see what WKW's editor William Chang does with the Editing Fashion footage!
I haven't seen any of tsai ming liang's movies yet, or fruit chan's. I'm not finding it easy to source some of the films/directors suggested by people here. But they're all duely noted and thanks again for your help!

I like the asian horror flicks a lot ..recently saw "The wig" (forgot the director) ... and one of my fave movies is "The scent of green papaya" which is one of the most beautiful films ever shot (its by Anh Hung Tran -vietnamese-).
I've seen like all the movies of Yimou Zhang -chinese- ... loved every single one to death!
