Saturday 15th October, I have just seen the report in I-D magazine whilst sitting here in the library, on 10 years of the magazine, there is a great picture of skin heads taken by Nick Knight, it shows the back of the guys in a see of tungsten over;oaded yellow colour, a great fun shot. has this been produced as a post card, if so I would love to have a signed copy for my collection.
I was wondering also, is Nick one of the founders of i-D magazines aS Rankin is to Dazed and Confused and the whole stable of magazines in relation.?

I believe that Nick knight is a contributing Editor since the earlier stages in his career! The founder of i-D is Terry Jones. Please let me know if my information is wrong?

After graduating from the College of Art and design in Plymouth in 1994 I stayed here, doing some television work as well as building up a body of work which I want to turn in to a book, taking in the culture of the South West of England.
A few years ago I had an Exhibition of photography with Barry Lategon at the Wharf Arts Centre in Tavistock.
Geographicly this area is very beautifull with every extream of the landscape within 1 hrs journy, from waterfalls to great woodland, from woodland to the moors. from the moors to the sea in varius directions. Mentality wise Plymouth in perticular is hard work, you get no help from anyone.
This year I have been getting people in to magazines, last year I produced a DVD on Plymouth artists, this year I have started producing art cards and Christmas cards from my work which are selling at varius outlets in Plymouth at the moment but I want to expand on that. A lot of my work is using the figure in the landscape and this is why I prefer living near the Country than in London.
I think that possibly the worst aspect of this City is lack of real imagination from the powers that be in the right areas, I seem to be doing as much as anyone promoting the area.
I get frustrated becouse in order to achive my goal of getting established I am living well bellow the poverty line plowing any money I have in to taking my creative work further, I could not imagin now working in any other direction. I spent 12 years in the RAF, 5 years full time Mountain Rescue, Three years working for Nato. before getting in to dead end jobs and then picking up in the direction I was destined, spending 4 years studying art media and photography, which more than anything taught me the diffrent mediums that can be used beyond the lens, This year I have taken my photography further by using the silk sceen process, and have used scans to creat other forms of art work.
I am qlso working in film and dv video to extend from photography, and shoots I have done to take the process in to the moving image. Hopefully my work should be poetic in its approach otherwise it is failing.
This is the only forum I use, I would not be interested in going in to a forum talking noncense about nothing, It is also easy for others to be non constructive in there views without giving any help constructivly, I am only interested in only giving constructive help and feed back.
I keep ahead on what is going on, on a daily bases, and unfortunatly get bogged down with issues as you have seen in the forum, this is becouse, having working for the top end of the system I can read between the lines and see the very hypocritical way elements of this Country is run, being out and about constantly I also talk to a lot of people and see a lot gping on.
My view is life is valuable and for living and making the most of
Going mback to Nick Knight I like the way he seems to experiment in his work, sometimes random accidents work very well, also when using colour I prefer to see rich and bold colours and lighting that brings it out.
Sorry for talking so much have a great day Seb

I became formally introduced to Nick's work maybe three, four years ago. I was walking down the street in my suburban Canadian town and noticed an advertisement on a bus stop for Dior Addict. You know what I'm talking about.

This is before I even knew what fashion really was or was ever involved in it. There was something about that shot that made me think outside of the Canadian box. Anyway, Nick's great. I'm a big supporter of pushing the creative envelope with new techniques and a mixing of mediums. I've been saddened by he fact that not many people I encounter know him by name. I don't want to be stroking any egos, but he's definately one of the few photographers out there who are breaking new ground when it comes to Photography.

You are right I first saw Nicks work on this site and then started looking out for it, I have seen his work in magazines and like the way he experiments and takes the image further.
It is also vey good what Rankin has done in creating Dazed and Confused, it has also formed a showcase for his photography which helped him get established on the international scene. We need more people like this pushing the boundaries of creative image making in fashion.
Who is the Dutch photographer who mainly works in Black and White and his name begins with V?
Great photographer.

I'm sorry sebastion but you can't put Rankin and Nick Knight in the same league, thats like comparing McDonalds to The Ivy.

Now, now boys. Let's avoid this descending into a slagging match and see if I can fill in a few details (from my holiday in New York, I should add!).

Nick wasn't a founder of i-D, but an early contributor. I believe that he first approached Terry Jones about his 'Skinheads' project and it was he that advised Nick to turn it into a book. Nick was later (early 90s, I think) asked by Terry to act as the picture editor of i-D when Terry was very focused on the launch of a Japanese version of the magazine. He did it for something like 9 months.

Sebastion, Nick speaks very well about the colour experimentation work you refer to in an interview we did for Yohji Yamamoto's issue of 'A Magazine', which accompanies his retrospective exhibition that was on in Florence and Paris this year. There is a Paolo Roversi shot of Guinevere on the front and I'm sure your local art school library could get in a copy or some such.

As for Rankin, you can't knock what he (and all those at Dazed and Another) has achieved in terms it being something of an creative empire. For which Nick often works, you will have noted.
