Is the Oscar still as important as before?

Do European and Asian film makers still think it's a major deal to have their films as nominees in the Best Foreign Film category? When there are so many international film awards in the world, so many good films out there annually, the Oscar, one award show, only one category for foreign films, that doesn't really reflect the international film community at all. The Cannes Film, Venice film festivals, even in South Korea, and the UK, their film awards are more the force to be reckon with than the Oscar-the Oscar at this point is really just being looked at as one with lots of history, but really, this one Oscar that just past, who really paid attention to it?

In reply to KaWai:

I never saw it. But, I don't think the Oscars were ever intended to be international. It's an American awards show celebrating American movies. So you can't really chastise them for that can you?

Also worth noting - all four major acting awards went to Europeans.

'No Country for Old Men' deserved to win Best Picture. It's incredible.

I guess it is still important, because it must be an amazing feeling, screaming "I won an oscar"!
