My name is Joseph and I am a newly freelance fashion photographer based in Manchester. Does anyone know the best way to go about gaining photographic agency representation ?

My work can be viewed at www.josephstoryimages.com

I realise I do not produce 'beauty' type fashion and that my work is not everyones cup of tea ... but I still want to push my work as far as possible.

Any ideas, advice or experience would be really useful.

Cheers
Joseph

dear joseph,

i love your works!
try to join the photography forum like deviantart.com, etc.
Lots of my friends got their photography job by signing in to that forum.
Few of 'em are even got into agencies!

Good luck! :)

If you could get work without the agencies is better you don't need to pay the agency fee. Just knock on doors and email and send your portfolios to as many magazines, ad agencies, fashion designers as possible. I work with a photographer he just made cold call to the right magazine and he has been working with them for at least 15 years on regular basis, he has never signed with any agencies. You need to contact modeling agencies too they work with photographers to do tests they are a great connection.

Small local magazines are a good place to start, they are always looking for fresh blood. You might want to find out about jewelry designers too they need photos of close up beauty shots with jewelry, they are mostly smaller budgets they don't like to deal with agencies, they prefer direct contacts with talents. Find middle to upper middle fine jewelers and jewelry designers who have enough budget and who are trying to brand themselves as the more luxurious but not Cartier yet-they might be the right balance for photographers who are needing the bread and the creativity.
