Through out history the creative people that seem to leave there mark seems to be linked through any one period of creative history.
The early 1990s brought us Usherwood, Spender, George Orwell, Herbert List and Cecil Beaton; they formed part of a wild and very expressive middle class bohemian group, who seemed to be able to do what ever they wanted.
Some of the photography from this period is still reflected in the photography style of people like Bruce Weber.
To me the photography was a lot more creative, and also a lot more complicated to achieve a great picture.
I think that there was a far better play on lighting and shade technique which then moved across in to early cinema. (Painting with light)?
Herbert List is a photographer that should be remembered, he was a great friend of Stephen Spender the poet and they spent a lot of time travelling, and having a very open lifestyle between the Second World War.
List was the son of rich Coffee merchants and had a lot of money to follow the photography direction that he chose which was photographing the beauty of the male using black and white negative film and are classical pictures from the period.
In the book the temple, reference to the body being a human temple, Spender talks about Herbert List but re names him Joshem lens.
Two days ago I found a book on Cecil Beaton who was also closely linked to this bohemian group of very creative people.
Cecil or Sir Cecil Beaton was born on Jan 14 1903 and died on Jan 18 1979
He was a fantastic photographer who also worked in theatre and I believe that he was a great fashion designer who created the clothes for the film My Fair Lady or Pigmalian.
Looking through the book I felt that this is what photography is all about, being very creative and imaginative, and creating art from light. Some of his photographs where very surreal, especially a series on Dali.
Hope that you like this series from the book.

Cecil did a lot of work for Vogue, so a lot of the pictures are property of Con De Nast publishing.
But I feel that he is a photographer worthy of being rememberd.
I will show examples of work from Herbert List soon.

In what way do you think that Cecil Beaton is NOT remembered, Chris? He's probably one of the most extensively documented British photographers of all time.

You should have a read of his diaries before you consign him to your 'heroes' pile, though. A thoroughly nasty, snobbish misanthrope. There's a question for you: can you find it in your heart to continue to laud a creative once you've discovered they're a catastrophic human being?

In reply to Sandrine:

There are lots of people with an arrogant and bad attitude but who create great art, music etc.
I like the pictures that I have posted.
Some of them have been seen time and time again as classic pictures from the period.
I am sure that I might have had hummer failure if I met the guy, as I am a person who does not put on an attitude or try to put on show, I find such people very hard work and a total pain. But the art world is full of them.
I get the impression that you might be doing the same here. In a simple point with trying to pick on things.
I found the book, liked the pictures and posted them here so that those who do not know his work or the links between artists of the period can see.
Informing those who do not know.
So I posted not for an argument but to inform, if you can add to the story on this group of people rather than target me that would be very constructive don’t you think.
These are the pictures from Herbert List and the link to Spender that I mentioned.
Sometimes when looking at art it is better not to look at the characters bellow the surface, if you did you may be throwing away an awful lot of art, as a lot of the people are dysfunctional and challenging, this is what makes them stand out from the rest.
All the best
