Mmmmm, now I feel like a klutz - I just posted an entry about what people are using. My main aim in asking the question, was to find peoples responses to the lens look issue - I agree with all above, in so far as the actual tool being unimportant. I do really feel though that digital doesn't allow the magic of the lenses to do it's thing.
Yes, I suppose what I'm getting at is the lenses. I've been using a Holga lens on a Canon 5d to try and get some magic, and can't get anywhere near the look of the Holga lens on a Holga.
I have until recently been using a fuji GX680 with pola type 665 then scanning the negs. But I've run out of all the stock I bought and now it's gone.
Maybe I've answered my own question now - maybe it's just the therapy I needed, not any specific answer!

;D

Also the films-when digital can manipulate the grain in photoshop whereas in film cameras you have to think ahead of using what kind of film to get what effects, and lens, it's like working different parts of the brain more so than shooting with digital.

Some have a way of shooting film. These photographers would only use one type of film, one type of lighting at full blast, and shoot within a very specific setting on camera. As such that they're usually not required to meter the flashes at all in most instances.

All I can say, as a sometimes digital assistant, is that CaptureOne kicks serious butt compared to FlexColor when it comes to speed and processing power. Why can't they make the software not have to freeze everytime a batch of files is being downloaded?

And andrewf, the reason the Holga lens doesn't work on the Canon 5D is because the camera's CMOS sensor is 35mm full frame. And I believe the Holga is a medium format camera, therefore, only about 1/3 or so of the lens [and the center of it at that] is what ends up on the final image.

The only solution is to use a full square medium format frame 6x6in ccd chip type back. I don't know if one even exists yet.
