hi Patch,

i think i understand where you are coming from...

and i might agree with you phrased your question in a different way...

i don't think it matters if Karl is a "photographer" in the way you and others define it...

your question is an interesting one though... and as someone who is also a musician and song writer this concept comes up all the time with my musician mates... true, a classicly trained musicain might be able to perform a peice of music "better" than a self taught musician... but that doesn't mean a self taught musician can't compose a "better" or more interesting piece of music...

i think karl is a fantastic "composer"

sorry this is written so poorly but i just woke up and have to run but wanted to reply before i forgot...

i should probably expand on this later...

Hey, thanks for your input. I origionaly decided to post my comment as I felt that the Chanel campaigns in question were extremely flat and lacked any defining characteristics one way or another. My feelings of negativity are'nt towards Karl as an artist or an individual but the Chanel campaigns that have unbelievably been excecuted by him. They are simply snap shots of a model adopting various poses and for me personaly and I know for a lot of other people too who cant be bothered to post a comment on here do the potential of producing art for commerce no justice at all. I know Karl is a hugely creative individual which makes me even more shocked to know that he is the one behind these particular campaigns. You have to ask the question why has such a creative man produced such a pooradvertising campaign for his own brand and the answer quite simply is because he does'nt have the technical ability to communicate the origional vision that he might have had. However, the question that I would like answered is why has he been allowed to?! And is there any one out there that agrees with me?!

I am not so sure about the music bit with all my respect.........Marvin Gaye couldn't read or write music when he became a musician and when asked by a young lad ( Lionel Ritchie) in an interview which conservatory he had attended to, his answer was ...what is that ?......and yet he is an icon in his own right...He wrote his music by using a music writer to convey his inborn talent...Technical knowledge is not good enough....the elements of being truly talented, to have a vision and originality ( whatever that might mean ), I dare to say are very crucial in order to be able to produce works that are of earnest relevance and/of importance in the chosen field....

So does Karl Lagerfeld possess these qualities Galileo's Universe?! Should he have been commissioned to produce the advertising images? Could the campaigns have been any more alluring to the viewer and crucially the buyer? Could the oppotunity have been taken for a more creative and dinamic series of images? I am still talking about the images in British Vogue at the moment. What do you think?

I think.... he possesses the qualities for what he in my view is passionate about regarding his speciality (read : the producing of fashion ).... about him being commissioned to make the images for Vogue, to be honest I think the chance was taken away from someone whose truly 'passion' ' talent ' and originality is in (fashion) photography....having said that if he indeed had the talent for photography ...then what counts is a successful result....but then again unfortunately it is all about ' prestige ' and prestige and power makes people rather poor in judgement....that is a stumbling block in letting new talent being exposed to the larger world .... and forgive me for being so blunt......

Personally I find Karl Largerfeld a very versatile, creative person, as far as the art of photography, it's very personal, but I think classically a good photograph is about light, mood, composition, and a point of view. you said Karl wasn't trained, but many masters never went to school to learn how to take pictures, but they learned as they went along, doing the jobs. I think Karl technically is a good photographer, he doesn't have a specific style to me, he doesn't over-used photoshop to retouch or add things it seems in the print ads, which I like. I find many ads now have used computer to manipulate-too much, the essence of photography has been lost, when we look at pics in magazines, the ads especially, we are probably looking at 30 percent original photo and 70 percent digital enhancement/changed/added on, there's nothing authentic anymore, as far as pure photography goes. It's a novelty to see an ad that is a simple strong photography, no special effects at all, and simply beautiful. I like Karl's work in the field of photography, he can shoot anything, and he doesn't seem to care about creating a "style".

Is photography an important art? I think in the commercial field every photographer tries to do something interesting, to inject their own say into the project, not to let the client completely takes over and dictate, it's always a struggle. Maybe commercial photography as art is a bit high brow. Why is Karl not qualify to shoot? Why does he have to be trained? He has shot for many years doesn't that count? He shoots many non commerical stuff too. Karl is powerful enough and talented enough to not have to take the normal route most photographers have, but Avedon wasn't trained he started as an army photographer, so many photographers-really well known, older ones, never went to school, never followed the academic path and some fell into photography, how one started doesn't matter, if that person is talented matters more. Dior's ads are so over-retouched-that's not photography, that's majorly photoshop art, overshadowing photography. The last Kate Moss shots for Dior ads, the background was added on later-the lighting on her face clearly didn't match the background outdoor-like setting. ANd all the photoshop added on glare-it's not just taking a photograph anymore, and to compare Dior with Chanel, is to compare two different animals.
