In reply to Galileo's Universe:

Fashion is a language of signs, symbols and iconography that non-verbally communicate meanings about individuals and groups. Fashion in all its forms from a tattooed and pierced navel, to the newest hairstyle, is the best form of iconography we have to express individual identity. It enables us to make ourselves understood with rapid comprehension by the onlooker.

......" This book is part of the Young Designers series which focus on young and innovative Designers..... a new generation of designers that have today made an impact on the future of fashion. "

------------------------------------

FASHION IS subjective and far more complicated than POLITICS in my personal opinion if only because of its fortune to be short lived once it reaches its final objective .... it then dies off .... and just like the exquisite SALMON 's cycle of life , read what FASHION's trends ... to be reborn again and again !

FASHION IS psychologically far more intricate than people could wish for and more often than not very difficult to pin down.

FASHION IS extravagant, hateful, manipulative, powerful, calculating, self- gratifying, greedy, wasteful, arrogant ,masochistic, voracious, authoritarian, childish, ugly, ambitious, radical, tribal ,irresponsible, shallow, unrepentant, with the ability to fool , it borrows, it copies ...... and yet equally : democratic, capable to be original, imaginative, inspiring, stimulating, resourceful, generous, fantastically creative, proud, beautiful, sexy, fun, seductive, intellectual, brilliant, skilful, historically reach, hopeful ......

FASHION is what you want it to be ...... and that is the beauty of FASHION .... it is up to each INDIVIDUAL to make of it what HE or SHE wants it to be ... you can burn it, shred it to pieces, destroy it, banish it, condemn it, prohibit it, incarcerate it ......... but FASHION has indeed the unique quality to energise itself.... and a will of its very own and far, far to intricately woven with the fabric of society and deeply imbedded in our psyche that even if we try our best to banish it into oblivion it always comes back ' to haunt ' us . The fact that one may wishfully want to reject it, it only proves its staying power !!! ....... Just make the best of it BUT make it .... in your terms ...... within your spirit of definition of what fashion means to you personally and not what fashion wants or may want you to be .... you are the one in charge and NOT ' FASHION' , but if you let FASHION to overpower you then you become a victim of FASHION .... and that, in my opinion and perception .... is not FASHION's fault .... but the individual's self !

Fashion is symbiotic .... is theatre... glamour and prone to ridicule but always vindicates itself !

FASHION IS defintly the ultimate PARADOX that no one can or is able to reduce to one simplistic thought ... However silly or ' irrelevant ' FASHION might prove to be in the end FASHION does know how to cunningly outwit us in front of our very own nose ... without anyone realising it !

I can totally relate in every way. I also attend the fashion institute of design and merchandising, but im majoring in visual communications. I dont just think about what im going to wear the next day, but I also pick out my outfits the day before (putting them together with matching shoes and jewelry). I think thats totally over the top and maybe a bit over obssessive, but its a daily routine for me because I love putting outfits together. I am inspiring to be a fashion stylist because I love the visual aspect of fashion. In highschool i organized the schools very first fashion show. I got 8 stores from the local mall to lend us clothes for the show and i had students (models) to walk down a runway and show off the looks at had put together for summer fashions. It was a huge hit and alot of work, but at the end I knew this what i wanted to do for my career. Fashion desginers are amazing at what they do, they look at fashion and say "ok, im trying to create a certain look and give out a certain message". Fashion is truly my passion, my life, and my inspiration. I think it has alot of meanings. People see fashion in so many different ways, and that is why there is so many different fashion designers with their own creative abilities. Fashion is creativity and uniqueness. Fashion says alot about who you are and what image your trying to portray. Fashion has no patience, it takes time to create a masterpieve. Fashion can make someone feel a certain way. Whether that person wants to have a independent look, or wants to dress trendy like the items featured in the fashion magazines. fashion gives everyone the chance to express themselves. As a inspiring stylist I hope to give people that image that will keep them well respected and looked up on by others by their fashion forward look. In the future, I hope to be a stylist for photoshoots, magazines, or work backstage at fashion shows. There is so many things I want to do in my career involving fashion i cant name them all, just as long as im involved some what in the fashion industry.

Fashion is everything. No two designers are the same, that is why I find it so exciting. It allows me to utilise MY imagination, to push boundaries, thoughts, traditional methods. I can reinvent myself, my mood, I can feel so much and experience so many differnet things - inventing characters, playing characters, dressing the most innocents girl or the most ruthless bitch. It is fascinating to see how collections develop, how your opinions and obsevations effect the finished pieces.
I adore fashion, it is more than me, more than you, it is everything and everyone.
It encompasses life, death and every emotion in between. Fashion can be anything you want it to be.

Fashion is in clothing, music, furniture, architectures, automobiles, jewelry, travels, or even just the way a person walks, with or without clothes on, could be defined as fashion. It's not really about materials, it's about the energy one tries to give, to project certain self image, ATTITUDES. Emotions one tries to evoke, through conscious deliberate arrangement in clothing, hair, sets, a way to make a mark in the world in order to validate one's existence.

Without humans' attitudes and emotions, clothes no matter how beautifully crafted and creative would only be costumes. Only when human emotions, complexities, attitudes, tradition, disciplines, energy, vanity, sex, seduction, living, all the things we do are involved, would we achieve fashion.

Fashion is one of the most successful industries on the planet. A number of individual designers now have companies that gross more P/A than entire countries. Fashion is a business, and a ruthless one at that.

Why does fashion industry operates in a ruthless way? It doesn't have to be that way.

Didn't any of you bother to watch Karl's video? ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoLvDa_BfgU ) It explains quite clearly - although a bit too quickly - what fashion means and why we have it and how it evolves. Just listen and stop thinking about yourselves (?!) - then you might understand.
