What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion is my life. I think about what I am going to wear the next day before I go to sleep, what I am going to wear to that concert on Saturday and the next outfit I want to design. Fashion is my dream. I am attending The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising to major in fashion design.
Fashion means creativity, inspiration, and so much more. I can create an outfit that might make a woman feel beautiful, sexy, or modest or however she may want to feel. I put emotions into my designs to give them their own personality. I believe I can create ways people can feel more confident about them selves and not worry about what they are wearing.
Be free, go crazy, wear that dress that just sits in the back of your closet. Most very one is judgmental whether they admit it or not. What you wear does not fully represent you. It may just be a piece of you that wants to stand out that particular day.
Fashion means you! How you are, what you want to be, how you want to be. You learn new things every day and that is what helps your mind grow. Ideas circulate and it can show even through something as small as a shoe. Different ideas come and go in my head and I know someone or many people can relate to that same idea.
Fashion is me, you, him, or her and means different things to different people. Fashion is every where and fashion will never die. Do what you want, where what you want, how cares what people think. It is your freedom of speech. Observe what others may wear they may give you ideas for new styles.
Fashion means so much it is hard to lay it all out. What does fashion mean to you?

I think fashion is important in the world because it brings beauty, and we always need beautiful things in the world. Fashion is a big source of inspiration to me, not necessarily clothes, but styles, the moods of fashion, the kind of feelings fashion tries to evoke-whether it's about violence, love, sex, death, women, men, seduction. I love the fact that fashion always tries to seduce, and seduction is a very fun thing to watch.

Wow, that was pretty insightful. At least, it was until the rhetoric wore a bit thin and I started enjoying the pretty pictures and the guy's quirky look instead – he's bang on trend!

Yes, a wonderful look!
I've heard he is getting funds from Channel 4 to produce a 40 minute version of this video.

Well, this thread is called what does fashion mean to you, so it's very personal. And fashion is a vast topic, it means something different to everybody, and could be used differently by anybody.

I recommended you watch that video as I thought it might help you to differentiate between fashion, art, style, glamour, romanticism, clothing design, sentimentality etc - all of which you seem to rope together as 'fashion'

Karl allow me to put this question to you in order to acquire more clarity in the thought that motivates you to express your view .... Do you think that ' FASHION ' embraces art , glamour, romanticism, clothing design, sentimentality '..... as part of its process to create a look ... a trend .... a feeling.... a thought of individual expression , or is FASHION simply an arid exercise in the art of creating and recreating ... ' clothes' , a look, a personal conviction about what fashion is or a person wants it to be ?

And my second question is .... what did FASHION mean to you before you freed yourself from the dictates of FASHION once you realised that it was of no positive use or influence to you ... to your spirit .... ?

But of course I do confess that I might be totally wrong in my perceptions of things !

I think fashion uses whatever it needs in order to succeed. Think of how few items of once fashionable clothing you would consider wearing again. ‘Classic’ styles last because they are intrinsically ‘good’ design, and surpass the fashion dictates of the their time.

Since I was a kid I have always thought there was something ‘wrong’ about fashion, but as I had a talent for it I could use it to my advantage. I still have the ability to work with fashion in order to achieve things, but I feel life is much better, more rewarding when doing things properly.

-----------

" I think fashion uses whatever it needs in order to succeed. "

Indeed !... so we can agree that once all the elements are ' cooked ' together they all became part of that creation .... but the end product will be always called fashion .... all intertwined together.

" ‘Classic’ styles last because they are intrinsically ‘good’ design, and surpass the fashion dictates of the their time. "

Then we can agree that it stills fashion ... well thought fashion ... timeless.... positive fashion !

"Since I was a kid I have always thought there was something ‘wrong’ about fashion" ..... My personal thought is that fashion is still very intertwined in your chain of thoughts because you are very passionate and preoccupied about the negative side of fashion ...... and that somehow tells me that you are in a paradoxical manner ... 'slaved' to fashion , under its spell ..... but within a totally different context ...... :):):)

" I still have the ability to work with fashion in order to achieve things" ... But if you allow me to be frank ..... then I say " why waste such a talent when we all perfectly know that such a quest/ battle, is almost impossible to win unless that is if we forcefully vanish fashion for good but then that is just being authoritarian and that would be again contradictory if we are advocating for man's free spirit to do things so that individuals can fully express themselves .... In strange way Cervante's Don Quixote comes to my mind ....

With all my consideration then I ask myself " Wouldn't it be better not to deny yourself the opportunity to do something positive in fashion such as looking for new ideas to make fashion better and less damaging to the environment ? " ..... something that makes a difference in fashion in the positive sense ?.... This would be, indeed, a great 'fight' worth considering ... but then again this is just an opinion ...

PS... What about a cloth line with the label ... " SAVE THE AMAZON ", environmentally responsible and with most of the proceedings going towards helping to rescue our totally invaluable Amazon Rainforest .... the biggest lung of our most precious and irreplaceable planet. It doesn't just belong to Brazil but it belongs to us all ....... then again I realise that it is wishful thinking ...... :):)
