Yes, this was tacky, vulgar. This seems to me he was trying to stir controversy for the sake of controversy, for the sake of trying to shock the public.

On the other hand we could look at it .... the 'idea' behind of such a 'concept ' ..as an attempt of to hastily 'endow' the fragrance with a kind of aphrodisiac 'power' .... of it could be something intimate that belongs in the sphere of wishful thinking in a 'Freudian' way ....just guessing !.... either way it was absolutely badly translated by whoever put the whole end result together, lacking any sense of subtlety, finesse and not to mention that the image also lacks any aesthetics worth noticing ...
There seems to be a confusion between 'sex sells' and ' pseudo-porno sells'

Able to achieve images of provocative is brilliant, I didn't find Tom Ford's perfume ad to be anywhere provocative, only has shock value. In this vintage photo of YSL, Loulou looked like an Antonio Lopez's fashion illustration.

The looks in the photos were very ahead of its time, one could wear any of the outfits in the photo today and still look chic.

There are many mysterious elements in this photo which made it classic-provocative, sexual, powerful, timeless, yet of its time, very seductive.

I suppose that such aspects aren't possible to put together anymore in a convincing way because everything somehow seems to have lost the air of 'mystery' .... along the way ... with nothing new to discover ...
I heard one day someone saying that we have to thank Madonna for having broken all the ' taboos ' in her raw kind of way ..... and the rest is history
