According to the dictionary the definition of GLAMOUR is :

the attractive or exciting quality that makes certain people or things seem appealing or special , beauty or charm that is sexually attractive, magic .

ORIGIN early 18th cent.(originally Scots in the sense [enchantment, magic] ): alteration of grammar . Although grammar itself was not used in this sense, the Latin word grammatica (from which it derives) was often used in the Middle Ages to mean [scholarship, learning,] including the occult
practices popularly associated with learning.

How many of today's so called 'glamourous people' would fit the definition ? .... I wonder ! ....I think today's glamour has acquired a totally different
meaning .... it is mostly referred to dressing expensive and 'trying' to be 'glamourous' ...... In my opinion you can not be glamourous if you don't know how to carry it with conviction ... the clothes may be glamorous but it is more than that .... it is allure in the basic sense but magnified by the wearer of glamourous fashion ... and it is indeed magic !

The photoghrapher David Sims seems to struggle and work with these issues. I think this must be the reason for his work standing out from that of his contemporaries - i.e. more depth and a more challenging approach produces a more lasting image.

On another note, anybody who hasn't read Alice Rawsthornes' brilliant book on Yves Saint Laurent should really do so and I wonder if it will be now made into a film. Any suggestions for the lead?

When we think Tom Ford is being controversial in his ads, YSL had already paved the way years ago. And I think YSL's ads are much more classy and provocative than Tom Ford's.

Controversial?? I have never seen Tom Ford do anything even slightly controversial!
It was all just marketing and rehash.

I just feel Tom Ford in his perfume ads try to be controversial for the sake of stirring controversy, to me it's borderline tacky.

Do you mean this add ? .... I don't think that there is anything controversial about this add ! I think that when he approved of such 'image' for his 'man's perfume' he was either confused or he was totally desperate to get the head lines .... because his ' magic wand ' seems to have lost its 'power' and somehow by using such image perhaps it might get its vitality back ...:) .... You can be vulgar as in 'VULGAR'. no harm in that ... but you can also be vulgar as in ... totally silly and desperate !
