Gareth Pugh wins 2008 ANDAM Fashion Award

Showing messages 1–9 of 9

With a considerable, consistent talent for spectacle (most recently showcased in his contribution to our very own 1/1 Art of Football project), it was only a matter of time before British designer and longterm SHOWstudio collaborator Gareth Pugh received financial reward to match his critical acclaim. This morning, Pugh became the latest recipient of the ANDAM Fashion Award and a cash injection of 150,000 euros into his label. Most interestingly, this cash will enable Pugh, the quintessential enfant terrible, to stage a catwalk show within Paris Fashion week - his first - slated for 2009.

Why does everyone go to Paris? London gives rise to fantastically unique talent and then it leaves... Even designers whose main schtick is 'Englishness' such as Westwood and McQueen show in Paris. What does Paris have that we don't?!

You are totally right !..... London is as a matter of fact more fashionable as in forward, full of talent and with vibrant energy .... but Paris has the high fashion aura created by the grand couturiers of the past and a lot of
' air ' whereby people still believe that it is the ' fashion capital of the world' .... but as a matter of fact Paris is nothing more and nothing less than a trade mark that adds value to a commodity called High Fashion ...:) sadly but true ..... as they say make history and then go to sleep .... lol!
The funny thing is that Paris becomes really fashionable only when the fashion shows are on ... when all the foreigners swarm in from all over the world ... buyers, press, clients, etc, from Tokyo to Rio de Janeiro to San Francisco to New York ......
Paris will always be 'Paris' ... just old ' grandeur ' and a lot of attitude in the matters of ' make believe ' ....:):)

Surely Paris's 'old grandeur' doesn't translate to 'bankable new talent' as much as London does.. And if it's safe, wearable and predictable you're after then NYC fashion week has that down to a T. I still don't see why all the buyers go to Paris, I really don't.

You would be surprised to see how much ' snobbism ' is attached to the whole Paris fashion drama ! ... even the so called 'respectable ladies' in Chanel would give you a punch on the face to get to the front of the line .... they become total savages ... lol ! that is the effect Paris has in the psyche , is pure psychology and very little to do with 'bankable new talent' .... it is all between the ears :):) ... you would be surprised to see how many new designers open boutiques in Paris just for the prestige ( so they think ! ) but there is no money to be earned at the end of the day ..... that is when they wake up and realise that Paris ..... how does the song go again ? .... 'Hollywood is just a dream' .... but in this case .....' Paris is just a dream'

Indeed ' Buyers' .... but why indeed move to the Paris venue when you are such a high profile, prolific and exciting new young designer ? ..... unless that is of course to get more worldwide press coverage because it is ' Paris ' .... then it is all about maximising press coverage ... read worldwide exposure in all the mayor fashion magazines, that being the case then it is very understandable that Gareth Pugh should be in Paris ... for the ultimate seal of approval I suppose ...:)
