SYNAESTHESIA

Showing messages 11–20 of 21

I’ve heard of blind people being able to distinguish colour by touch, and can just about cope with the idea that different colours might have some kind of perceptible physical resonance. But I just can’t ‘feel’ the crossover between visualised colour and sound (if I’ve understood) in the way this project is about to explore. I mean, I happily played with the prototype image/piano interactive for ages and had no idea it might all get quite so much more… well, more. Having (done everything backwards and) listened to the recorded briefing discussion in full now, this is all going to be far more complex than my tired old linear brain could ever imagine. But then, wow!

And sometime in the near future I hope I’ll learn to keep my substance free, 5am sleepless, random net inspired nonsense to myself… Sorry.

Detlev! I'm so glad you're back I'll let it pass (but then I think you might be right anyway so hey) - cheers!

i was only joking - i think it's admirable that you get so involved and interested. It's what the projects are there for after all. it just makes me think that you should be out there pioneering stuff yourself or maybe writing about it for a broader audience (who knows, maybe you are already)

I can not get out of my head the fact that SYNASTHESIA in its true form, is like an acid trip. Have to say....... never done acid, yet I can only imagine...I guess. I found the discussion regarding: current media imposing SYNASTHESIA on the masses interesting. To think that audio and visual stimulation, from all sources of media, provoke multi sensors/sensations in the human brain, is amazing. I assume advertisers have caught on to this science. I really like the science aspect to this project.....is science really just a justification of art? I wanted to interject whilst listening to the pre-production meeting, and use the word "cells".....instead of "pixels"...yet I was not in the pre-pro, I was only watching the download. Biology of fashion should be a major forum topic.

How about that "whilst".....

Since Daniel Brown posted the lastest working version of this piece (was it really only a week ago?!)I've been waiting to see if anyone would talk about it again. What do people think?

I'll admit I'm still intrigued because I know this isn't the final version, and even as is it's very pretty, but I'm also perplexed. Seperately, the 3 elements - image, sound, shimmery effect - I can cope with but together I have difficulties. I'm surprised by how synthetic the sounds are, and by the time I've drawn in enough of the underlying photo to see what it is (skin, button, silk) I'm supposed to be hearing, the sound has become more closely associated in my mind with the sparkling effect than the matter depicted in the image beneath. So I ended up playing 'hunt for Gemma Ward's face'. Is it just me?

Oh wow, that was fun! Wiggling the sliders around, I reached a point where the sounds made me much more curious about the material underneath than before. Thanks - and happy birthday Daniel!

I agree with the timing--how while waiting for the image to reveal itself, the sound seems to become more closely related to the shimmer effect, it's hard to naturally see a relationship between the sound and the clothing.

Visual artists have been bouncing this idea around for more than a century, it is interesting and exciting to see developing in fashion. I suppose it shows how closely art, fashion and music are linked...looking forward to seeing more.
