I've really been into Antony for quite a long while now, I saw him perform at Jools Holland a while ago and I don't think there was a person with a dry eye in the house. I really enjoyed the video for this too, I just thought I'd say well done Show.

I just was curious, do many other people enjoy his music or not. If it's played on shoots I find people tell me it's 'fucking depressing' or funeral music, which is quite sad really, but hey ho.

Also, Flux would you please calm down, I cannot fathom having the time and energy to put into moaning and being self rightous that you have. Get a job, perhaps something manual would drill a bit of toughness into you.

Same here, stayed well clear for a while just due to my rightoueus "anyone that wins the mercury isn't worth bothering with" attitude, but was seriously embarressed by my desperation to be underground when I put the time in.
I recently found out he is performing at the Barbican in November (4-5) with Charles Atlas, a video artist that worked with Hegarty back in 2004 on a peice entitled 'Turning' at the Whitney Biennial.
The peice involves Charles Atlas filming 12 NY "beauties" that are rotating on turntables placed on the stage, and then editing the footage live to an accompaniment by Hegarty.
I saw a preview that looks pretty fantastic so am very excited about the performance, the show at the Barbican will be a re-enactment of the 2004 Whitney performance and I beleive is also being shown at a Biennial in Mexico and Rome sometime between now and November.
Charles Atlas is also having a short retrospective of films at Tate Modern, and these include work with Kiki Smith and Leigh Bowery.
Atlas also directed Antony and the Johnsons latest music video I beleive although I am not sure of the tracks title.

Ah 'funeral music' ... how often that phrase has been applied to music people don't like. I think that it's generally says more about the person saying it than the music. Music having many different meanings to many people, but a lot of it is wallpaper to stop people and spaces feeling empty. Therefore music that encourages that will make those people feel more like that. Of course some people simply aren't interested in Music. That's why Pop exists ;-)

If you want more 'funeral music' check out the works of David Tibet (especially Current 93) who alledgedly discovered Antony.

he is amazing but i liked him better before he became so heavily appropriated by the fashion crowd, announced by an appearance in the sunday times style section last summer. his music is certainly original but i just wonder how far you can go with the whole transgendered fractured homo-despair. thing. apparently he is going to be collaborating with bjork soon.

I've often wondred is Antony the estranged son of BBH advertising powerlord, John Hegarty? I would love it if he was.

Will, I'm actually going to that show, the depressing part of it is that I only found out about it as some family members up in Yorkshire were going, shows his appeal I suppose. I've got great expectations...

I think a lot of Music like Bjork, Sigur Ros, Gusgus and Antony is labelled as 'trendy' and get pigeonholed into being the kind of music graphic designers listen to (as they wear bape t-shirts and rare air force one's) but I don't think it should detract from the quality of the music. It's depressing really, many of the bands I listen to when shooting read like a who's who of trendy music, but it's bands I really enjoy - the fashionable connation is irrelevant.

Anyway, as is life. Andrew I haven't forgotten about the writing thing, I've just been so swamped the last few months with the studio and work - email me matey, I'm afraid I lost your address, hope you are well.

Yeah Im hoping to catch it somewhere, quite interested to see what if any content it will actually have. Not because Im being arsey about it, just interested to see if it will simply be an exercise in VJing as opposed to a succinct performance peice, in the context of the biennial. anyways.

@ Ben Morris: "I just was curious, do many other people enjoy his music or not."
-whilst browsing updated viewer-profiles here on showstudio, i realized that every second one had anthony at least in their top 10, regardless the consistency of order :/

unfortunately the "transgendered fractured homo-despair appealing" benefits him much more, than his lyrical achievements. and he seems to be fine with that- so the fashionable connotation isn't irrelevant in my oppinion.
it is never!

@Dorian Moore: david tibet discovered anthony?! :o
say no more...

Well, that original post was actually posted before the 'revamp' so nobody had their profile lists speculating who they listened to music wise.

Smartarse.

As I said, 'Alledgedly', I think he's popped up on a couple of tibet records ... first release were on his imprint Durtro: http://www.durtro.com/

As for the your country not being listed ... our list is based upon the ISO 3316 standard, so not sure how your's escaped that. Will update it when I get a chance

speculating?? i don't think i indicated something like that.
for me it's just an amazing fact how quickly anthony got adopted by loads of superficial music listeners nowadays. i thought i was clear.

didn't got the smartarse. your signature? or...
if perhaps that should be me, there's no reason for it.
my name is natascha ;)
