hi eucinpyos

what are you thoughts on the wowow party/house of cards?
is it too vague or is it naivity.

I agree, i dont think you should have to read all the background info, and have everything spelt out.It should effect you in some way and then you can read all the extras to gain further understanding.

I looked at the simon foxton sittings and it was immediately interesting, whereas on this project im still left asking is there something more....

but like jv says i guess we should wait till the whole thing has finished.....im still glued to the post production though....

ok, enough is enough. i'm so sick of you just criticising all the time. so i challenge you to put up or shut up, ben, valentine, no fun et al. lets see what you can do with the Brutalised brief, wether its pictures or styling its up to you.
You don't like what is going on, so show us what you can do, if you dont please just go away
as they say 'come if you think you're hard enough" . If not .........

Maria, I actually quite like the Brutalised brief. Very intelligent & thought-provoking; if it works it could way outshine the FASH-OFF/Sound of Clothes projects. Its nice to see something which takes a theoretical/ontological perspective & makes it concrete.

Paulus,

I actually missed the house of cards, so I can't have an opinion on it. I think that what we're being opened up to with this project, more than others I think, is a relatively young artist who still hasn't fully matured in his creative process. He's letting us see a lot of unedited ideas [or they just feel unedited]. It's like being at a brainstorming session except that it's part of the process and some can say art in itself.

Like I mentioned earlier in a post somewhere, I take a very different approach to conceptual art as there is a lot that I could never enjoy. For example, during the first party, some people performed to R Kelly's "In the closet"[?] album. At first I got the humour part of it and laughed, but the execution of the presentation was very amateurish and I could only imagine where it came from on a creative level. For me, that's the sort of idea that maybe I would come up with and bring to the table but not necessarily execute without really working on it. Maybe that's the difference between me and other artists.

Either way, I do think Gareth has the talent. I do think that good things will come from this project.

To end off, I once had the chance to hang out with Owen Pallett and roomate Steve Kado as they were shuffling ideas for a live performance show based on Dungeons and Dragons with tons of screaming and craziness. I remember thinking while there that those ideas should probably stay in the kitchen. Anyway, the ended up performing this thing and it was kinda lame. BUT, by then Owen was already working on his Final Fantasy project and sure enough most of the elements of that early idea for a performance are now implemented in the project... and this time around they're AMAZING.

Which also brings me to another point. This !wowow! movement isn't just happening in London, similar movements are going on in every city I have been in in the last year and some. There's definately a reason for it, but I won't get into it.

Ok, here's a good example of well developed performance art:

Saw them at a gallery show of some sorts a week or two ago. Dance routines, amazing beats and tons of energy. I think they'd be well received in London.

is there a difference between performance art and an art performance?
i'm not sure but have always wondered.

surely the reason that there are similar groups to !wowow! in lots of other cities is because of the same reason we started !wowow! - we were/are a group of art graduates wanting to do something, its really hard to get a job with out 2 years experience (and like HOW are you supposed to get two years experiance if you dont have two years experience) and we all kind of wanted to do our own thing. which just so happened to be party and dress up...

Hannah,

No yeah, completely. I was just saying that in a vague allusion to once again the naysayers who made it seem like !WOWOW! came up from the depths of hell to ravage and dismember the London fashion scene. You can run, but you can't hide etc. I also think that there's deeper reasons for these movements surfacing, but that's an art project in itself...

as one of the people that started wowow, the reason we started it was because me and matthew hated the club we were djing in and we wanted to have a night where people could dress up, do what they wanted, and use it as a platform for their art/music/whateve... it is really hard to get a job once you graduate - i guess i've been lucky enough to kind of create my own job at the magazine

i guess there has always been an "underground" movement at any moment in time so its not really anything new. the fact that gareths part of it doesnt meant that its just a fashion specific thing. people tend to forget that within the group theres some really talented musicians, dj's, painters, sculptors, stylists, performance artists, writers....

it seems that the current projects by gareth have suffered due to the hype surrounding wowow... in that people expect too much...

i dont really understand what you mean - did you expect to see 3000 people outside the architecture gallery drinking vodka whilst i djed sweet child of mine 9 times in a row?
