Composer, Sound Designer
Nick Ryan is an award-winning composer and sound designer. In 2004 he received a British Academy Award for ‘The Dark House’, a groundbreaking interactive radio drama that was broadcast live on BBC Radio 4 in September 2003 and was the first BAFTA ever to be awarded for radio. Ryan's core interest in composing to picture has resulted in many commissions for film including Film Four short 'Spin' and many TV documentary commissions. Other projects include the soundtrack for Sony Playstation 2, Odeon Cinema titles, MTV’s ‘M2’ idents and World Aids Day. Ryan's portfolio also includes a recently completed three year contract with ‘BBC Imagineering’ as an Audio Media Research Consultant. At the BBC he was responsible for the conception of many groundbreaking future applications for sound in media. During this time he co-authored two Government reports 'The Future of Music' and 'The Future of Radio'. Ryan is currently working with composer and theoretical physicist John Matthias and the University of Plymouth to compose a symphony for twentry-four piece string orchestra. The work entitled 'Cortical Songs' is based upon theoretical models developed in 1950s, which describe the ‘firing’ of groups of neurons in the cortex of the brain.
