From 2000 to 2002 Japanese-born Mikio Sakabe studied at ESMOD (Ecole de Mode Internationale) in Paris. Sakabe then continued his studies at the Hogeschool in Antwerp and graduated in 2006. In the same year he won the Fashion Special Prize at ITS#5 in Trieste, Italy. Sakabe first presented his own collection at Paris Fashion Week in 2007. His garments take inspiration from urban architecture, creating three-dimensional spaces and even miniature buildings which can be seen within his designs.
