>David Bailey

Photographer

David Bailey is one of Britain's most highly acclaimed photographers whose career has spanned over four decades. He is undoubtedly part of the mythology of the 1960s when his flourishing early career was extensively documented in the pages of British, American, French and Italian Vogue. Following a traineeship with leading fashion photographer John French, Bailey went on to become an accomplished portraitist and a documentary photographer. Even before his editorial acclaim, he published 'Box of Pin Ups' in 1964 - a lasting paradigm for the publication of photographic imagery. After characterising the spirit of this pioneering period, Bailey progressed into moving imagery, directing both commercials and television documentaries. He continued to work for British Vogue and formed a fruitful partnership with the then art director Terry Jones, creating some of the most vivacious and overlooked imagery of his career. As much as Hawaiian model Marie Helvin typified his career in this 1970s period, Catherine Bailey became the tenet of his work in the 80s, and also featured in his 1995 South Bank Films commission 'The Lady is a Tramp'. Bailey is an Honorary fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.
