Bernhard Willhelm is a German fashion designer who is renowned for his love of mixing absurdity with high fashion. Born in Ulm in 1972, he moved from his native Germany to Belgium where he studied at Antwerp's Royal Academy, graduating in May 1998 with Honours and establishing his own label in the same month. By March 1999, Willhelm was showing womenswear at Paris Fashion Week and by 2000, had launched his own menswear line. Willhelm's career so far showcases a range of diverse achievements, among them designing the Misericordia uniform for a Peruvian school, designing the wardrobe for a theatrical adaptation of R.W. Fassbinder's screenplay 'The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant' staged in Berlin in January 2007 and most recently, his creation of the wardrobe for Bjork's 2007 World Tour as well as a sculptural outfit that famously appears on the cover of the artist's latest album, Volta. Willhelm has received wide acclaim for his brave approaches to fashion, winning the Moet & Chandon Fashion Award in September 2001 as well as first prize and accessory prize from the ANDAM (Association Nationale pour le Developpement des Arts et de la Mode) as presented by the French Minister of Culture in April 2005. Willhelm will be showing a retrospective of his work at The Fashion Museum in Antwerp from July 2007 to January 2008.
