Paris Menswear

By Hywel Davies, 10:22 Thu 25 Jun 2009

From today until Monday, Paris hosts the menswear Spring/Summer 2010 collections. The catwalk shows are the finale to menswear season that started last week with the Pitti event in Florence. A vast trade show of often monotonous menswear, each season the organisers invite a contemporary designer to raise the profile of the proceedings. This season Japanese designer Jun Takahashi from Undercover was invited and consequently presented a minimalist, sportswear-informed collection in the Boboli Gardens. The minimalist theme carried through to the visitor numbers which were fewer than last season and a clear sign of the financial times. Despite the fall in attendance at Pitti, a positive theme emerged through a focus on craftsmanship, quality and anti-disposable fast fashion. This was echoed in the Milan menswear collections that followed, as designers took a sober path to next season. Demonstrating this was Alexander McQueen who chose to present a film instead of a catwalk presentation, and showed a collection instilled with artisan qualities and craftsmanship. The clothes were perfectly judged and reflective of a perceptive approach to dressing men. Fortunately menswear is less riddled by fluctuating trends, as designers tend to build on signature concepts and designs. So in Paris, as the invitations are unwrapped, SHOWstudio takes its premier position to witness the season ahead.
