Jason Schmidt's Standing Tall
The Curator of the festival, Michel Mallard, is good at finding a place for 'photographers at a certain stage of their career' as this year's contender for that slot, Jason Schmidt, put it earlier today. His show, 'Standing Tall', actually consists of relatively few shots -fashion pictures he has taken over the past five years for magazines like V, Russian Vogue and Harper's Bazaar- but this sunken space is a great setting for a bit of spectacle. The epic pictures are in the spirit of the great 60s and 70s 'fashion dramatists', like Cowan or Parkinson, with models towering from Russian monuments or flexing their legs against the backdrop of Greek ruins.
