TRANSMISSIONS: Also from Berlin

Today marks the last day of a succesful event encouraging art world visitors -critics, curators and of course collectors- to come to Berlin over a long weekend at the end of April marked down now in the calender as Berlin Gallery Weekend. Premised on the idea that it galvanises an international audience to travel to a varied but co-operative scene of exhibitions openings and social gatherings focussed on exhibitions in galleries rather than the temporary presentations of an art fair - that mushrooming beast that is thriving in the booming art world. One of the highlights of the weekend was galerie Giti Nourbakhsch's presentation of Cathy Wilkes installation 'Non Verbal (version )', (2005/07). With a found object and assemblage approach to sculpture, and including paintings that are displayed obscuring the 'face' of the human figurative element - two female mannequin, the installation hints at a personal narrative (self portrature?), and is appealing in the difficulties it presents you in decoding it.
