TRANSMISSIONS Girl in a Pearl Earring
Nicole Wermers proposed her first public sculpture during a residency at London's Camden Arts Centre last year. A giant mother-of-pearl and pink lacquer drop-style earring has been 'pierced' onto the side of the building, to be unveiled later today. Wermers continues her interest in the transformation of materials into what are considered luxury goods, and what she considers to be a relocating of "the attractions and surfaces of a contemporary consumer culture", as well as setting up an interesting dialogue of scale concerning architectural and personal adornment. There is something particluarly charming about this image of the installation in progress, reminiscent of Lilliputians capturing their sleeping giant in Gulliver's Travels .
